From 1952 to 1956, Ida Lupino joined fellow Hollywood luminaries Charles Boyer, David Niven, and Dick Powell in the anthology series Four Star Playhouse (also known as Star Performance), where each actor took the lead role on a weekly basis. The series, which aired on CBS, earned 14 Emmy nominations during its run, including one in 1956 for Lupino as Best Continuing Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

Based on a Cornell Woolrich story, The Listener (1956) tells the story of Sheila Miller, a woman fed up with her marriage, who murders her husband. The dead man's paralyzed father, who overheard her planning the crime, is unable to speak or move, yet he finds a way to ensure that justice is served.

In Face of Danger (1955), on the eve of her 100th birthday, Emma Foster is interviewed by a reporter about her life, particularly her relationship with a notorious outlaw named Laramie Cole.

The Stand-In (1956) follows Marion Clayton, a glamorous superstar who takes Hollywood newcomer Grace Markham under her wing. When Grace fails to secure work as an actress, she takes perverse delight in watching Clayton's career collapse. Ida Lupino both stars in and wrote the original story.

Dark Meeting (1956) centers on Billie, a single woman struggling to make a success of her family business, a bowling alley in New York City. She hires Dan, a handsome stranger, to help out, but when Dan makes romantic advances, Billie investigates his past, only to discover something terrifying.

Ida Lupino's involvement in these diverse projects demonstrates her versatility as an actress and her creative contributions as a writer and director. The anthology series Four Star Playhouse showcased her talent and earned critical acclaim, while her work in standalone films like The Listener, Face of Danger, The Stand-In, and Dark Meeting further solidified her reputation as a multifaceted and accomplished entertainer in the golden age of Hollywood.
